Real Betis vs Sevilla: Tips, Odds, and Match Preview
The likes of FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid tend to grab most of the headlines in Spanish football, but that won’t be the case this weekend since there will be an epic matchup on Sunday between Real Betis and Sevilla. The latest edition of the Derbi de Andalucía will clash two teams in opposite directions. Betis are on an impressive winning streak while Sevilla are struggling for form and might not be good enough to reach European football again in 2025-26.
At least from a statistical perspective, there’s a strong argument to say Betis have been one of the best teams in LaLiga in recent weeks, and they would sit in second place in the standings if counting only the latest five rounds, winning all five matches and trailing only FC Barcelona in that department. On the other hand, Sevilla are coming off a disappointing loss to Athletic Club in their most recent encounter and have won just two of their last five LaLiga matches (W2, D2, L1).
Betis Aiming to Move Closer to European Qualification
Real Betis underwent a rough patch in November and December, to the point that several fans were asking for the firing of Manuel Pellegrini, who happens to be the winningest coach in club history in LaLiga. However, Los Verdiblancos have turned things around and are currently playing their best football of the season amid what has been an impressive winning run.
Aside from winning their last five LaLiga matches, Betis have suffered just one defeat over their previous nine games in all competitions (W7, D1, L1). That loss came against Gent in the UEFA Conference League during the return leg of a tie in which Betis had already built a commanding lead. Pellegrini’s men haven’t lost a LaLiga match since February 8, when they lost to Celta de Vigo by a 3-2 score.
Real Betis Injury & Suspension News
Johnny Cardoso (muscular strain) and Giovani Lo Celso (leg) are considered doubts for this match. Marc Roca (foot) and Ángel Ortiz (ankle) are out.
Not Just Another Derby for Sevilla
Sevilla know they’re the underdogs ahead of this matchup. While the previous form doesn’t matter too much ahead of a rivalry game, the inconsistencies Sevilla have shown during past games make it impossible for this issue not to be analysed. They were showing signs of a potential turnaround. Still, the recent loss to Athletic Club showed that Sevilla’s lack of consistency on a game-to-game basis remains a massive problem for their manager, Xavi García Pimienta.
One area that could give Sevilla some much-needed confidence is that they’re undefeated in their last four league matches against Real Betis. Keeping that streak alive here could keep their minimal European chances alive for, at least, one more week.
Sevilla Injury & Suspension News
Sevilla will be depleted in midfield for this game since Lucien Agoume and Djibril Sow are suspended. Plus, Tanguy Nianzou (thigh) remains out and might not return to action before the end of the 2024-25 season.
Real Betis vs Sevilla Prediction
There’s no question this is going to be a low-scoring affair, a cagey contest where spaces and chances to score will be at a premium. Betis have been the better side of late, and they have enough players that can change the game with just one touch of the ball, whereas Sevilla are currently lacking those same players. Therefore, and based on their outstanding form thus far, Betis should secure the win here, although it’s going to be a low-scoring matchup.
