PSG vs Marseille: Tips, Odds, and Match Preview
Even though the title race is over, PSG hosting Marseille in Le Classique is never a dull game. The Parisians have had the upper hand in the last four Ligue 1 Classique clashes, but make no mistake, Les Olympiens are waiting for the right moment to strike.
Paris Saint-Germain has a lot going for it in this matchup. The last time they saw Marseille at Parc des Princes, they sent them packing with a 4:0 win. However, Luis Enrique is bound to shuffle the team after the emphatic victory at Anfield that saw the young PSG side progress to the UCL quarter-finals.
That would serve as the signal for the away team to attack. Under former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, Olympique de Marseille is playing open football that can catch even the best sides off guard. And with the top 3 still to play for, they will be dangerous.
PSG in Dreamland
PSG is fresh off the heels from pulling a stunt of the season so far. Les Parisiens went to Anfield to face the in-form Liverpool with a goal disadvantage. They won on penalties and booked a quarter-final bout with Aston Villa.
They’ll be buzzing for the rest of the season, but whether that bodes well for the next game is a question. PSG is sitting at the top with a 16-point lead and has a 9:0 record in the last three meetings with Marseille. For that reason, Enrique may be inclined to rest first-team players as he did against Rennes in the game prior to Liverpool away.
Still, I have them as favourites for the Le Classique.
PSG Injury & Suspension News
The heroic Anfield efforts took a toll on the PSG team, with the club captain Marquinhos likely to miss the Marseille game due to injury. That means another likely start for Lucas Beraldo at centre-back.
Marseille Fights for European Football
Marseille has been in patchy form the entire season. De Zerbi started his Olympic campaign with a 5:1 against Brest, putting five past opponents on multiple occasions. However, just like at Brighton, his open-winded, ball dominant football went through a winter blip that saw the side losing the cup and falling way behind PSG on the table.
Les Olympiens are currently sitting in second place with a three-point advantage over Nice, five more than Monaco, and no European football this campaign. The latest 0:1 loss at Velodrome to Lens put a dent into their top 3 aspirations, and Marseille will be looking to get something from the PSG game in order to secure Champions League football next season.
Marseille Injury & Suspension News
Amine Harit apparently suffered an injury setback and will not be in contention for the final Les Classique of the season. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg is also a doubt, having missed this week’s training session nursing a foot injury.
PSG vs Marseille Prediction
The game is perfectly poised for a high-scoring back-and-forth between the two sides, but given the nature of Le Classique and how much it matters to the fans, I wouldn’t be willing to bet on it. To me, this looks like another PSG win. BC.GAME is tipping it at 1.44, and that’s where I place my chips.
The odds of 1.58 at Stake for both teams scoring isn’t too bad either. It’s time for Marseille to finally put one past Donnarumma.
