Newcastle vs Barcelona: Tips, Odds, and Match Preview

Newcastle United are back in the Champions League, but they couldn’t have asked for a tougher debut since they’ll face one of the top title candidates, FC Barcelona, at St. James’ Park.

Fresh off their first win of the 2025-26 campaign against Wolverhampton the last time out, the Magpies haven’t been playing at their best so far, so they’ll need to show improvements – and soon – against a team that recently put six goals past Valencia this past weekend. At least on paper, it’s clear the Spanish giants look like favourites in the opening UCL contest for both clubs.

Magpies on the Way to Recovery?

There’s no question this hasn’t been the start of the season Newcastle United fans dreamed after reaching the UEFA Champions League in 2024-25. The team grabbed headlines for all the wrong reasons in the summer, as they failed to sign the majority of their targets and also lost Alexander Isak, their best player, to Liverpool. Despite striking out on several targets, they ended up bolstering their attack with the arrival of players such as Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade.

The results weren’t really there for Newcastle, either. Their 1-0 victory over Wolves the last time out was their first win of the 2025-26 campaign, and their performances against Aston Villa and Liverpool, where they suffered a 3-2 defeat after conceding the decisive goal on stoppage time, evidenced that they were due to receive better results sooner rather than later. Will that be enough to get past Barcelona, though? Newcastle are certainly trending in the right direction, but they’ll need to deliver a perfect performance to steal points from the Blaugrana's visit to St. James’ Park.

Newcastle United Injury & Suspension News

Jacob Ramsey (ankle) and Yoane Wissa (knee) are out, and both players should remain sidelined until after the October international break. Anthony Gordon is suspended in the Premier League, but he’ll be available for this European fixture.

Blaugranas Are Heavy Favourites Away from Home

FC Barcelona have endured a relatively rough start to the season and didn’t look as dominant as expected in their first three games of the campaign. A late-gasp win over Levante after being down 2-0 and a less-than-impressive 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano generated some criticism of Hansi Flick. However, the German manager silenced all the negative comments with a 6-0 win over Valencia the last time out, a game where Barcelona were missing several first-team regulars.

That win over Los Che goes to show just how deep and dominant Barcelona can be on their day. With Robert Lewandowski, Frenkie de Jong, and Raphinha all expected to be back in the starting lineup for this European fixture, there’s no question Barcelona should be considered the favorites here. Aside from the fact that Newcastle have struggled a bit defensively, their lack of UCL experience could be costly against a team that reached the tournament’s semifinals in 2024-25.

Barcelona Injury & Suspension News

Los Blaugranas will have a key absence for this match since Lamine Yamal is out with a groin problem. Alex Balde (hamstring), Dani Rodriguez (undisclosed), Gavi (knee) and Marc-Andre ter Stegen (back) are also out. Frenkie de Jong (leg) missed the win over Valencia this past weekend but should be available and start here.

Newcastle vs Barcelona Prediction

Newcastle finally secured their first win of the 2025-26 season in the previous weekend, but the team is far from being at their best and have lots of things to adjust on both sides of the ball. It’s unclear if they’ll have enough quality to slow down Barcelona’s elite attacking trio of Raphinha, Lewandowski and Dani Olmo.

Barcelona are also in need of some adjustments, but they seem to be ahead of schedule following the 6-0 win over Valencia. Even if the Spanish giants are missing key players like Yamal and Balde, they should still have enough to defeat Newcastle on the road. Los Blaugranas are simply too good on offense to be denied by a team that has yet to reach its peak version in 2025-26.
