Manchester City vs Napoli: Tips, Odds, and Match Preview
Manchester City and Napoli will collide in what should be one of the heavyweight matchups of the first matchweek of the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League. Not only it will be Kevin De Bruyne’s return to the Etihad Stadium after his departure last summer, but it will also be a game where the Premier League giants will aim to kick off their European campaign on a strong note against the reigning Serie A champions.
Manchester City should be very confident about their chances playing at home following the 3-0 victory over Manchester United this past weekend, but they’ve also lost two of their four competitive fixtures in 2024-25. As for the Italian side, they own a 100 percent record thus far and will aim to continue that by delivering a solid performance on the road.
Manchester City Trending in Right Direction?
There was a lot of talk about Manchester City’s struggles in the early stages of the season after losing two of their first three Premier League encounters. However, the Etihad Stadium outfit found a way to bounce back against their bitter rivals in the Manchester derby with a 3-0 victory, courtesy of an Erling Haaland brace and a Phil Foden header.
Losing to Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton showed that there’s still a lot of work to be done for City to be where they want to be, particularly on the defensive end. However, the Citizens remain deadly on offense and are averaging 2.0 goals scored per game in their first four games of the season. As long as they remain a threat in the final third, City should have enough of a chance to continue their winning ways against almost every team in the world – especially at home where they’ve gone W7, D1, L2 in their last 10 competitive matches.
Manchester City Injury & Suspension News
John Stones will be a game-time call due to an undisclosed injury, but the center-back isn’t expected to be available. Mateo Kovacic is out with an Achilles problem, but he’s inching closer to returning, according to manager Pep Guardiola. Omar Marmoush (knee), Rayan Ait-Nouri (ankle) and Rayan Cherki (quadriceps) are all sidelined until the beginning of October at the earliest.
Napoli Aiming to Pull Upset Led by de Bruyne
Traveling to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City isn’t an easy assignment for any team in the world. However, Napoli are one of the few sides in Europe that have shown enough football to believe they can get a positive result out of this venue. Led by one of the best tacticians in the world in Antonio Conte, Napoli own a 100 percent record so far in the 2025-26 Serie A campaign.
The Partenopei squad is coming off a 3-1 win over Fiorentina in their most recent Serie A match, a game in which Kevin De Bruyne once again made a sizable impact. The Napoli playmaker spent most of his career at Manchester City and knows a thing or two about how to inflict damage on them. They should be confident in their chances from a performance perspective as well, as they haven’t lost a competitive match since February in a 2-1 loss to Como on Feb. 23, going W10, D5 in their last 15 matches in the Serie A.
Napoli Injury & Suspension News
Alex Meret (thigh) returned to full training Tuesday and should be able to start this match. Amir Rrahmani (thigh), Nikita Contini (hand) and Romelu Lukaku (thigh) are out. The absence of Lukaku means Rasmus Hojlund, a former Manchester United player, should start upfront.
Manchester City vs Napoli Prediction
Manchester City should monopolize the possession here and control the tempo, whereas Napoli are likely to sit a bit deeper and try to exploit them on the counter. The Cityzens have enough quality to breeze past any opponent, but Napoli have been excellent to open the season and should pose a complicated matchup for City from a tactical perspective.
Plus, City’s recent defensive issues can’t be overlooked, as they looked far from their best against Tottenham and Brighton. Expect this game to be a high-scoring affair with over 2.5 total goals.
