Chelsea vs Liverpool: Tips, Odds, and Match Preview
A marquee matchup between two “Big Six” teams will happen this Saturday when Chelsea host Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.
Both teams are coming off opposite results in their midweek action in the UEFA Champions League, as Chelsea grinded out a 1-0 home win over Benfica while Liverpool stumbled to a 1-0 defeat in Istanbul against Galatasaray.
Can Chelsea Start a Winning Run at Home?
Chelsea took a step forward with their win over Benfica in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, though the outcome was the only thing that should leave the fans happy. The win came through an own goal in the first half, and Chelsea once again showed lots of problems in creating scoring chances despite their abundance of talent in the final third. The loss of Cole Palmer due to injury has hurt the side enormously.
Their recent run of results in the Premier League has been far from convincing. They suffered a 3-1 defeat against Brighton the last time out despite grabbing an early lead, and the Blues are now riding a three-game winless skid in the league (D1, L2) while suffering back-to-back defeats. Enzo Maresca’s men will aim to get things back on track at Stamford Bridge, where they’ve lost just two of their last 18 home matches in all competitions (W13, D3), as they look to avoid suffering three successive league defeats for the first time since May 2023.
Chelsea Injury & Suspension News
As has been the trend in recent weeks, Chelsea will once again be extremely depleted when it comes to injuries. Cole Palmer (groin), Levi Colwill (knee), Tosin Adarabioyo (calf), Trevoh Chalobah (suspension), Liam Delap (hamstring), Dario Essugo (muscular) and Wesley Fofana (concussion) are out. Andrey Santos (strain) is questionable and quite unlikely to play, though he’s not expected to be a starter even if deemed fit and available.
What’s Going on with Liverpool?
It’s hard to understand what’s going on with Liverpool. Manager Arne Slot is not under heavy pressure by any means, but the team has suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time since March. They lost to Crystal Palace by a 2-1 score, a result that snapped the Reds’ undefeated streak in the Premier League and also suffered a 1-0 defeat against Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, following a complicated trip to Istanbul.
It’s hard to decipher what’s gone wrong for the Reds of late. The core of the 2024-25 team is mostly intact, and if anything, they should be even better with the additions of Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz, just to name a few. However, Liverpool have been slumping defensively and have gone five straight matches without keeping a clean sheet in all competitions. Plus, Isak has yet to score a goal for the Reds and Wirtz looks like the shadow of the players that dazzled Europe with Leverkusen in 2024-25. Mix all those issues, and it’s easy to see why Liverpool have been underperforming even if the record says otherwise.
Liverpool Injury & Suspension News
Liverpool aren’t dealing with too many injury concerns at the moment, but they’re expected to be without Hugo Ekitike due to a hamstring injury. Alisson is also out with a groin problem, with Geovanni Leoni will miss the entire campaign with an ACL injury. Federico Chiesa (knock) is questionable and will be a game-time decision.
Chelsea vs Liverpool Prediction
Liverpool’s recent matches have been tighter than expected, and it’s hard to trust them right now, even if they have a lot of quality in the final third. Still, this team is too talented to continue struggling for so long, and they should be able to bounce back against Chelsea. The Blues are depleted on both sides of the ball, and the Reds should take advantage of that to steal the three points from their trip to Stamford Bridge – something they haven’t achieved since the 2020-21 season.
